Wadesville: Gas/Convenient store Ownership

INDIANA – WADESVILLE

I had a meeting scheduled in New Harmony, Indiana recently and stopped at the Marathon station in Wadesville which appeared to be the only gas/convenient store in the small town. The store has changed hands over the year since growing up in Posey County over my 60+ years.

The observation included the business was being run by not your typical Posey County resident. The place was run down, dirty and would have been expected to be more at home in an inner city, based upon the condition of the property.

I was curious and researched the Ownership Patterns of “Marathon Gas Station” owners. ⛽️

What was affirmed;
South Asian immigrants (Indian, Pakistani, Nepali, and others) own and operate a disproportionate share of U.S. gas stations and convenience stores, including many Marathon-branded locations.

This is a well-documented entrepreneurial pattern going back decades, often involving family networks, prior experience working in the industry, and investment in independent outlets.
Examples of individual Marathon stations with immigrant (frequently Indian-origin) owners.

I decided to skip the fried chicken and onion rings.

Things have certainly changed in Posey County.
