Deery/Copenhaver Race Isn’t Over

If you thought the Deery/Copenhaver race was over… it’s far from it.

Yesterday State Sen. Spencer Deery’s campaign dropped a press release arguing that Indiana Recount Commissioner Paul Mullin’s long personal and professional ties to U.S. Sen. Jim Banks heighten the need for transparency after the commission invalidated eight otherwise legitimate ballots and flipped District 23.T

The release notes that Mullin recently introduced Banks at a Broad Ripple GOP event by sharing college friendship stories (Banks called him “a great friend of mine”), that Mullin once represented Banks as an attorney and served on his campaign finance committee, and that a Banks-aligned group spent over $1 million trying to oust Deery.

But the part worth stressing: Democratic Commissioner Michael Claytor, who voted the opposite way on those challenged ballots, said every decision the commission made was legal and that he does not question Mullin’s (or Morales’s) impartiality.

Claytor even highlighted that Mullin had previously demonstrated care about conflicts by appointing a proxy in a different recount after he had donated to one of the candidates.
