I just got off the phone with Angie Morey. Her 19-year-old son Matthew is the young man missing in the flood waters of Delaware County.
She wanted to update us on the search for her son. As you can imagine she is desperate to find him but also wants everyone to stay safe.
Angie told me there is talk that it might be getting safer for rescue boats to get into the water. She is headed up to the bridge where 10 of Matthew’s classmates from Delta High School were hanging out before 4 of them jumped into the water. Earlier in the day the boys had been having fun on a slip and slide in Yorktown. Matthew’s dad is a fire captain in Muncie, and his last words to his son were, “Be smart.”
Angie tells me the crazy thing is…. Matthew was always smart. Sunday he was to leave for Purdue. He got into the engineering school, and his sister is finishing up her 8 years in vet school. Matthew started at wide receiver, loved 7 on 7 football, and played basketball. Angie said, “Everyone loves Matthew.”
One of his coaches told me. “I had the privilege to coach Matthew I will say this you never find a young man so respectful and kind. He was a great athlete, a great teammate but even a better person. Praying for Matthew and his family.”
Angie is praying and hopeful rescue boats, a drone, or a National Guard helicopter might spot Matthew and bring him home.
If any children read this post, she wanted to tell them to please spend more time with your parents. You never know when it might be the last time. And when they tell you to be smart and be safe, they aren’t doing it to keep you from having fun, but she doesn’t want any other family to feel the devastation her family is feeling.
Tonight there is a candlelight prayer vigil at 8PM at Union Chapel in Muncie. Angie told me she talked with the boys who survived the jump. She knows they are hurting, too. She is hoping that they will have a relationship with God like her son. She said it is the only thing that gets you through in the darkest moments of your life.
